"As we approach first quarter of the 21st century, Africa is faced with grand challenges ranging from a rapidly growing population, shrinking natural resources to the detrimental effects of climate change. This situation has called for urgent deployment of both mitigation and adaptation measures in order to achieve sustainability in agriculture, environment and health. Rapid advancements in bioscience research presents Africa with a pool of potentially transformative technologies whose deployment will help in addressing specific societal challenges. Synthetic biology is one of the technologies that will help us achieve a sustainable Africa for the 1.3 billion inhabitants."
